Professional and social contribution

In this section I outline my contributions over the last few years to illustrate where I actively work to make change and to show my areas of competence and knowledge. I have included publications, presentations and media interviews.

This page includes the following:

About me

I work as a Co-ordinator/Senior Research Fellow at AUT University's Centre for Asian and Migrant Health Research (CAMHR) and Coordinator Grad Cert/Dip Addictions, Community Health Development. Prior to that I worked as an educator and mental health professional with broad experience in the fields of teaching, nursing and counselling.

The CAMHR brings together research that advances understanding of public health issues that can improve access to healthcare and promote good health among the Asian and migrant populations in New Zealand. We have undertaken projects related to Access issues for Chinese people, Migrant motherhood, Cervical cancer screening and Chinese women and collaborated with the Gambling Research Centre on a barriers to help-seeking project and evaluation of screening instruments project. I maintain the Aotearoa/New Zealand ethnic community issues, activities and announcements mailing list and co-founded and edit the Aotearoa Ethnic Network Journal, a free online journal which publishes commentaries and critical perspectives The AEN Journal promotes critical debate on issues facing migrants and refugees, ethnic diasporic and religous communities.

My education and training experience includes mental health, maternal mental health as well as therapeutic communication for nurses and osteopaths, clinical supervision for medical imaging and women's health, cultural issues and mental health. My experience covers classroom teaching from certificate through to post-graduate as well as in-service education and extensive workshop and conference presentations.I have been involved in reviews of programmes across disciplines, from mental health to English language for migrants and refugees. My clinical specialties have been in crisis care, on-going services for long-term clients, cross cultural service delivery, maternal mental health and group/couple counselling. I have particularly enjoyed being involved in service development and the liaison, consultation and creativity that that involves.

My active involvement in the community has seen me become engaged in voluntary work that enhances the wellbeing and settlement of migrants and refugees into New Zealand and I have been involved in advocating for supportive and inclusive national policies. I am passionate in advocating for the positioning of migrant and refugee groups (and similarly marginalised groups) as assets. I have harnessed this interest into my post-graduate research and my new research role . I am committed to understanding and disseminating research findings in an accessible and appropriate way to both education and practice. My key strengths and skills are my energy and commitment to education, social justice and the well-being of all New Zealanders. I have enjoyed positions of leadership and mentoring new health professionals. I am a member of the International Marcé Society and the New Zealand Co-Coordinator for Postpartum Support International.I am a Board member of The West Auckland Living Skills Homes Trust Inc. (WALSH Trust) (2004-2007) which was established in 1988 that serves people in the West Auckland community who experience mental ill health.I've also recently been appointed to the Editorial Board of the Journal Diversity in Health and Social Care and the Journal of Transcultural Nursing.
