Ruth DeSouza » Learning and development Learning and Development: Working effectively in health and social servicesWith a background of working in health and voluntary services over the last twenty years (yes I started very young!). I am interested in how we maintain our compassion and soulfulness when working with people. Burnout is such a drag!! I have found clinical supervision, peer supervision and group supervision vital in caring for myself so that I can be healthy and effective. This page offers a few links and the discussion of some concepts that are commmon in the area of learning and development. These include: Supervision, Mentoring and Coaching. I have also added links to do with self-care as I think this is a critically important area.
Clinical Supervision (CS)Freshwater (2005, p109) suggests that supervision provides a space for the “preservation or restoration of integrity in caring” Supervision provides us with an opportunity to look at ourselves and resource ourselves so that we can then re-engage in new ways and with some new knowledge and skills and strategies behind us with the people we are working with to facilitate well-being. In other words, clinical supervision brings practitioners and skilled supervisors together to reflect on practice. Supervision aims to identify solutions to problems, improve practice and increase understanding of professionals. (UKCC position statement, 1996).
