Education

I have been a student in Kenya, New Zealand and Tonga and somehow despite my best efforts to not be a high school teacher like both my parents, I've become deeply interested in educational issues and about improving participation in education. As an academic in a tertiary institute I am cognisant of the words of Bevis & Murray that "Teaching is a political activity" (1990, p326) and aware that tertiary institutes are places where knowledge is produced, reproduced and revised. As Pettman (1992) states, they both employ and deliver education to people and are an important place where racism or sexism are reproduced or struggled against- a microcosm of the world.

The Ministry of Education has a really stunning and comprehensive website so I highly recommend it for it's links and resources. Do also check out the Education Gazette and the New Zealand Teachers Council websites or the Education - Statistics New Zealand site and of course The New Zealand Qualifications Authority. The Quality Public Education Coalition (QPEC Inc) is a coalition of parents and educators concerned about quality education in New Zealand. Diversity and education

Educators need to acknowledge their limitations in regard to the cultural life of bicultural/multicultural students. We need to acknowledge that students bring to the classroom knowledge about their cultures, communities and educational needs. We need to ensure that we are informed about the conditions in which bicultural students live so that when dialogue occurs we can create opportunities for students to reflect, critique, challenge and transform the conflicts and contradictions that students face as an oppressed group (Darder, 1991). You can read more about strategies for engaging marginalised groups by following the links to my culture and health page and culture and education page..
